Have seen remarks here that “all optical cables sound alike” because “they all transmit 0′s and 1′s,” etc. That’s true, but it’s also true that coax transmits the same 0′s and 1′s. Coax cables sound different, and so do opticals. It’s not digits, folks, it’s the materials used, echoes, resonance, impedance matching, clock timing/jitter, etc., etc. These AR’s do have a cleaner, clearer, more detailed sound than their more expensive Monster Lightspeed counterparts (which are generally awful).  On high end equipment, they sound clean but too lean, the very low end being detailed and tight but not as ‘there’ as the rest of the spectrum. A (very) mild hardness in the upper midrange, especially on female voices. The lead-in of instrumental attack is a little sloppy (piano, drums, guitar, etc.), often making some piano keys sound as if they need to be screwed down tighter or something. On lesser audio systems (Best Buy, Circuit City, etc.) the AR’s did acquit themselves quite well. Give them a 4 in cheapo systems, but with mid-fi or higher their faults become amplified. Still, at $35 they present a good, well-focused soundstage and sounded mighty nice on my older (cheapo) system, which typically had bloated bass and wiry highs that this cable handled well. For high-end gear, unfortunately, they won’t do. I have to add points to the AR’s overall rating, however, because of their very good DVD picture playback. In that respect, the AR’s were far superior in DVD playback to the over-priced junk being sold by Monster nowadays. On my audio system I have better, pricier cables, but these AR’s have found a permanent home on my Toshiba DVD video player.


Spawn HD-720 Enables Remote Gaming on Your Console

I’m pretty sure that none of you have ever imagined that, at some point in your life, you’ll be able to access your video game consoles (regardless of the type and manufacturer) from pretty much any location where a broadband Internet connection is available. Well, that moment has apparently arrived, since a company called Spawn Labs has created a system that will allow users to do exactly that, in a very simple and fast manner.

This system is formed out of several components, out of which the Spawn HD-720 box is the most important. So, once the Spawn HD-720 has been connected to a console and configured properly, users will be able to play games in any location where there’s a wired or wireless access to your home broadband network. The Spawn HD-720 works with the Xbox 360, the Xbox, the PlayStation 3, the PlayStation 2 and the GameCube and a single Spawn HD-720 can be connected to one or two consoles, being able to provide remote game play access to one of the two consoles at a time.

Now, as expected, you’ll need a PC in order to play the games, because, in fact, this is what the system from Spawn does – “stream” the whole gaming experience to a computer system. For this purpose, one will also require the other components of the package, namely the Spawn Gamepad Adapter, the Spawn Player (a piece of software installed on the computer), and the Spawn Labs website.

The quality of the streaming will depend directly on the available amount of bandwidth, but, in ideal conditions, the device will send out 720p video at 30 fps. Latency is also pretty low when using a home LAN network, but changes dramatically when playing over the Internet. So, the average end-to-end latency is of approximately 100ms, while in less than perfect conditions, some additional latency is introduced, often ranging from about 25 to 50ms.

Additionally, the Spawn HD-720 supports PCM and AAC-LC stereo audio, and streams the sound from a game console to the Spawn Player, much like it streams video. AAC-LC audio is generally preferable as it requires less bandwidth for comparable quality, and you can choose different audio quality settings from 64Kbit/sec to 256Kbit/sec per channel (stereo is 2 channel).

Last, but certainly not least, we’ll also have to mention the fact that the Spawn Player has built-in support for the native console game pads for the Xbox 360 and the PS3, and should work pretty well with just about any gamepad (or even original gamepads, via the appropriate adapters).

Panasonic CY-BB1000D in-car Blu-ray player revealed

Panasonic revealed the very first Blu-ray player meant to be installed in a car today. It’s called the CY-BB1000D. Also announced was the HX-3000D, which is an HD standard DVD player, also for your car.


The Blu-ray player has a 7-inch display with a 1,280 x 720 resolution along with an HDMI input and Bonus View content compatibility. It is slated for a September 10th release in Japan for about $1,060.

The NX-3000D, on the other hand, has an SD card slot, 50W audio, a DVD drive, 5.1 channel audio support, an 80GB hard drive and a USb cable. It will be available on the same date in Japan for about $3,874.


Why HDMI? All you need to know before going digital

High Definition Multimedia Interface, or HDMI, is hailed as the next generation of audiovisual cabling. Simply put, HDMI is an all-digital connector that can carry high definition video and several digital audio channels all on the one cable. Analog video cables, such as component, composite or S-Video, are currently the main methods used to transfer picture signals in an average home system. Component is the highest quality analog cable as it breaks down the picture signal into three different cables — one each for red, blue and green. 8. What do the different versions mean?
