Epson 3LCD Laser Projectors

Epson has caused quite a stir at CEDIA Expo with the launch of its Pro Cinema LS10000 and LS9600e 3LCD projectors with reflective laser technology.

The LS10000 is a 4K model, while the LS9600e is a wireless 1080p projector. Both use a laser light source to deliver “unprecedented Absolute Black contrast ratio and one of the industry’s largest colour gamuts,” says Epson.

The 4K unit can project images with up to 1500 Lumens of colour brightness and the same for white brightness, while the Full HD one delivers 1300 Lumens.

Advantages of the laser light source are said to be rapid warm-up and cool down, high-speed contrast control for bright and dark scenes, and up to 30,000 hours of use. The ‘Instant On/Off’ function means pictures appear on screen or shut down with virtually no wait, says Epson.

Bright 3D Drive is designed for greater brightness when viewing 3D content, and both projectors can handle Full HD 1080p in 2D and 3D.

Operation is said to be “whisper quiet”, and on the LS9600e a WirelessHD transmitter connects up to five HDMI devices simultaneously. It also has MHL connectivity to display content from compatible smartphones and tablets.

Both models have 2.1 x power zoom, power focus, lens shift up to 90 per cent vertical and 40 per cent horizontal, as well as a lens position memory that can store up to 10 settings for 16:9 or 4:3 projection areas.

Epson says its new Pro Cinema projectors will be available in the US this autumn for prices “below $8000″.

Also new from Epson are three 3LCD Full HD/3D projectors: the Home Cinema 3600e ($1999), Home Cinema 3500 ($1699) and Home Cinema 3000 ($1299).

HDMI Licensing LLC has created a four-category labeling system for HDMI Cables

In an attempt to minimize confusion surrounding HDMI 1.4, HDMI Licensing LLC has created a four-category labeling system. There previously were only two types of HDMI cables:

Standard HDMI Cable: Supports up to 720p/1080i up to bandwidth of 2.25Gbps.

High Speed HDMI Cable: Supports 1080p or higher, including 3D or 4k/2k, up to bandwidth of 10.2Gbps.
With the introduction of HDMI 1.4, there are two new cables:

Standard HDMI Cable with Ethernet: Supports up to 720p/1080i supporting up to a total uncompressed bandwidth of 2.25Gbps. Adds support for HDMI Ethernet Channel (up to 100Mbps).

High Speed HDMI Cable with Ethernet: Supports 1080p or higher up to an uncompressed bandwidth of 10.2Gbps. Adds support for HDMI Ethernet Channel (up to 100Mbps).

Only home theaters with Internet connections will require an 2m HDMI cable with Ethernet. All other existing cables will support the remaining features of HDMI 1.4.

“With HDMI 1.4, only the Ethernet Channel requires a new upgraded cable,” reiterates Jeff Park, technology evangelist for HDMI Licensing LLC. “That is only exception that requires a new cable.”

Below is a chart of all the possible features of HDMI and what cables are required for each feature. When a homeowner is watching TV (or a projector) in any format below 1080p, there are only two instances when he will need a High Speed Cable:

  1. Deep Color
  2. 120Hz from the source

In both of these cases, if the homeowner is viewing 720p or 1080i content, a High Speed Cable is necessary because those features require almost double the bandwidth of standard definition.

Finally, 120Hz from the source is very different from the 120Hz or 240Hz achieved through upscaling built into the TV. All TVs manufactured today upscale the signal inside the display. If the signal is being upscaled, having a High Speed Cable will not make a difference.

Deep Color

Deep Color is a term used to describe a gamut comprised of a billion or more colors. Displays may express the capability of showing Deep Color while image data may express the characteristic of having Deep Color information.

Color depth and space

The color data stored for each pixel is an absolute representation of that pixel’s color. This contrasts to a color table system where each pixel is flagged with color data that points to an entry in a color table.

The xvYCC, sRGB, and YCbCr color spaces can be used with Deep Color systems.

Usage

Deep Color is rarely employed for actual video display outside high-end workstations and other specialized markets. Since the human eye is capable of discerning between no more than a few million colors, Deep Color is generally considered a marketing stunt that incurs space and bandwidth costs for no perceivable benefit. It has also not been scientifically proven to produce a downconverted True Color output that is perceptibly superior to image data initially captured with the True Color gamut.

Most analog displays can produce deep color merely by connecting them to a display adapter that outputs it, but digital displays must be designed for deep color from the beginning in order to produce it. Though some purely digital displays, such as early LCDs, have only analog video connectors, their input is internally digitized at a fixed depth.

Industry Support

The HDMI 1.3 specification supports Deep Color bit depths. It defines bit depths for Deep Color as 30 bits (1.073 billion colors), 36 bits (68.71 billion colors), and 48 bits (281.5 trillion colors).

The HDMI 1.4 specification supports digital still camera(DSC)-specific color spaces:SYCC601,Adobe RGB,AdobeYCC601.

At WinHEC 2008 Microsoft announced that color depths of 30-bit and 48-bit would be supported in window along with the wide color gamut scRGB (which can be converted and output as xvYCC).
