Viera TVs with built-in Blu-ray and integrated HDDs

Panasonic has unveiled some new HDTVs in Japan that include models with integrated Blu-ray players and versions that sport integrated HDDs as will. The Blu-ray sets are the most interesting and included the 37-inch TH-L37R2B and the 32-inch TH-L32R2B. The 37-inch version will sell for about 240,000 yen.

Both sport full 1080p resolution and have integrated HDDs that can record programs. The Japanese translation leaves a lot to be desired, but it appears the sets can write recorded programs to optical media. Panasonic also pulled the wraps off new LCD and plasma sets with screens of 42-inches, 46-inches, and 50-inches in the plasma line and 37-inches, 32-inches, and 19-inches in the LCD line.

The sets have 1080p resolution except for the 32-inch and 19-inch LCD sets, which only have 720p resolution. The line has internal storage of 500GB with the exception of the 19-inch set with a 250GB HDD. Pricing runs from 100,000 to 390,000 yen in Japan. For best results use Cablesson HDMI cables

Blu-Ray Players get benchmarked : PS3 smokes em’ All!

If I keep coming on PS3 superiority on handling Blu-ray materials, I might get flamed with fanboyism. May be it is better if I state the opposite first. Why PS3 is not a good standalone? PS3 is loud, the noise tops my projector runs at high beam mode. Bluetooth remote sucks, additional IR dongle requires to add PS3 on Universal remote control. Hardware constraints; no multichannel audio support on analog output, advanced audio codec limits on LPCM though HDMI. Last but certainly not least, it’s awfully ugly!

But truth hurts; we’ve seen how PS3 leads loading time in a small group test, here’s another victory for PS3 fans – An exclusive Blu-ray player benchmark test from Blu-ray.com – The dreadful beast once again crowns the best in system booting, disc loading and operation. It is not only stands out among 12 Blu-ray players in test, but performance trumps contestants in Blu-ray Disc Java department by a large margin.

No surprise there, the results reflect the superiority of cell power processing in comparing with hardware-based units. The best-equipped standalone can’t even come close to the level of PS3 achieved; on the other hand, user has to deal with cooling noise works against the excessive heat resulting from the cell processor.

Test in question didn’t cover audio quality or image reproduction in legacy DVD upscaling or blu-ray disc, but unit’s ability to handle intensive Java content and interactive menu. You can visit Blu-ray.com to see more information on how the test was conducted and categorized.

What is the best Blu-Ray player out there?

With the versions of Blu-Ray standards changing as often as they are, and with new features being added to various Blu-Ray discs its no surprise that even with the choice of HD-DVD being eliminated its still hard to decide which Blu-Ray player to buy. You might be surprised at the answer to this new question.

The answer lies with Sony. No, I am not talking about any of their many dedicated Blu-Ray players, I am referring to their gaming system, the PS3. Just consider the cost benefits of it, I just did a Google search for “Sony PS3” and under their shopping link found a brand new 60GB PS3 going for $240, a search for “Blu-Ray Player” yielded the cheapest, relevant, result being $246.99, with the average being between $350-$400, and, if you are just buying the PS3 to play movies, you can also use the included drive space for some movies or music and make it into a bit of a media center type device.

So what if you aren’t a gamer, if you just want the latest and greatest that the new Blu-Ray features are offering up the PS3 is the way to go. The updates are as simple as Sony throwing up a firmware update on the network and you downloading and installing it all on your PS3, the whole process being almost completely automated for you. It is the simplest and most feature rich Blu-Ray player there is out there, and if you ever get the itch, you can always use it for its intended purpose, gaming.
